Combating of fish counterfeiting

Project:
WATSON
Description:

The problem: A global seafood supply chain involves many actors and stakeholders, like fishers, batch processors and factories, retailers, transporters, cold storages, exporters, regulatory entities, and finally consumers. These stakeholders collaborate to ensure correct and high quality along the supply chain. Norwegian white fish is a high-value product that is exported to a global market. However, mislabelling is a problem in the industry, where both species substitution and adulteration can occur. There is a need for a mechanism that can guarantee origin of the fish, stop species replacement, and document proper ethical trade for the Norwegian fish. WATSON solution: This pilot implements a blockchain-based platform that support real-time data collection from IoT sensors and enterprise systems collecting data throughout the fish supply chain. Printed or electronic labels (QR Codes, NFC tags, RFIDs) will be developed to enable access to detailed product information through the digital product passport.
